Wyona D. Dennis-Hiatt age 102 died peacefully Friday, June 29, at Lakeview Village retirement community in Lenexa. She was born June 13, 1910, the daughter of Winford and Ethel Wilson Dingus of Mound City, Kansas. She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, their children and grand-children. In 1933 she married Orion G. Dennis. They made their home in Mound City until the outbreak of World War II, when both enlisted. Mrs. Dennis-Hiatt served with the U.S. Marine Corps Office of the Post Audit in Quantico, Va. After the war, the couple returned Mound City. She worked in the Farmers & Merchants Bank and the Mound City Post Office. She was active in the Mound City Christian Church, the Order of Eastern Star, American Legion and the high school alumni association. After Mr. Dennis died in 1980, she moved to Lakeview Village. There she spent many years as a community volunteer, helping in the beauty shop and community store and keeping accounts for her neighbors. In 1989, she married the Rev. T. Neal Hiatt, a long-time friend from Linn County, who also lived at Lakeview. He served as Lakeview chaplain for many years. She often accompanied him when he called on neighbors and friends. Services will be at 11:00 am Thursday July 5, 2012 at the Mound City Christian Church. Burial will be in the Mound City National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Lakeview Employees Holiday Fund, or to Kansas City Hospice. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.schneiderfunerals.com.
