Sarah Groothouse

Sarah Bertha Groothouse, 85, of LaCygne, Kansas, died Saturday June 16, 2005 at Miami County Medical Center, Paola, Kansas. She was born June 20, 1920 in Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Harry and Ida Reed Harris. She attended school at Morse Central Jr. High School and Argentine High School in Kansas City, Kansas. She married Joseph L. Zweimiller in 1938 and to this union one child, Joseph L. Zweimiller was born. The marriage ended in divorce. She married Albert Lucas in 1941 and to this union one child, a daughter; Marie was born and died at birth. This marriage ended in divorce. In 1945, she married John Groothouse and to this union one child, a daughter, Johnnye Ann Groothouse was born. John and Bertha lived in Armourdale until 1951 when the flood claimed their home. They moved to Kansas City, Kansas for a few years then to the Highland Crest District until retiring to laCygne, Kansas in 1975. Bertha worked at many jobs during the war, but worked 27 years for Colgate Palmolive before retiring and moving to LaCygne. She is survived by her son, Joseph Zweimiller & wife, Angela of Overland Park, Kansas. a daughter, Johnnye Ann Lane & husband, Billy of LaCygne, KS; her grandchildren, Kerri Quintana of Shawnee, Kansas; Karyn Eastwood of Fontana, KS; John Wm. Lane, Sara K. Wilmurth, both or LaCygne, KS; Shannon Sandness of Shawnee, KS; Michael Lane of LaCygne, KS and Eric Zweimiller with the United States Marine Corp on the USS Carl Vinson; her great grandchildren; Julie D. Burris & husband, Tony of Centerville, KS; Justin Quintana of Shawnee, KS; Jennifer Eastwood of Fontana, KS; Johanna & Johnny Lane of Anchorage, Alaska; Allyson Lane of Oregon, Ian Raynard and Ciara Jane Sandness of Shawnee, KS; Gracye Ann Wilmurth of LaCygne, KS; her former daughter-in-law; Susan J. Zweimiller, ; a sister, Catherine West of LaCygne, KS; several nieces and nephews; family & friends. Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, John on August 9, 1989; a brother, John H. Harris and infant daughter, Marie. She loved collecting Kewpie dolls and doing genealogy. It was her love of genealogy that led her to serve on the Library Board at LaCygne for several years. She enjoyed keeping in touch with everyone by writing letters and sending cards. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She always made everyone feel at home as though they had known her many years even when meeting her for the first time. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, July 20th at Oak Lawn Cemetery, LaCygne, KS; Visitation will be from 6-8 PM, Tuesday at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, LaCygne. Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
