Robert L. Ely, 89, of Mound City, Kansas, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 22, 2007. He was born July 5, 1918 in Merriam, Kansas, the son of Charles Cadwalader Ely and Stella MaKoy Hollowell. He was married to Ruth Whittle on February 29, 1944 and to this union three children were born. He later married Betty Kindred Self in June of 1982. She preceded him in death on September 30, 2004. He served his country in the Army during Word War II. After his military service, he worked at Kansas University Medical Center, General Motors and finished working career as a dry wall finisher for Standard Improvement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mound City. He enjoyed bowling and playing golf. Preceding him in death also was one brother, Charles Ely and four sisters, Anna Ely, Grace Justice, Stella Fraser and Alberta Hughes. Survivors include two sons, Jeff Ely of Mound City, Kansas and Steve Ely of Gladstone, Missouri; one daughter, Janet Jackson of Louisburg, Kansas, a step-son, Bina Self of Mound City, Kansas and a step-daughter, Drena Turner of Coffeyville, Kansas; four granddaughters, Beth Jackson, Kelly Jackson, Brianna Ely and Sarah Kaneaster; five great grandchildren and six step-grandchildren, Shawn, Troie, Crystle, Holli, Andy and Mia. Memorial funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday October 29, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Mound City, Kansas. Inurnment will be at 1:30 PM Monday October 29, 2007 at the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 PM Sunday October 28 at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City. The family suggests contributions to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
