Olen W. Hampton, age 93, of LaCygne, Kansas passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at his home. He was born December 7, 1917, near Parker, Kansas to Melville R. and Sarah Jane Sullivant Hampton. Olen grew up on the farm and attended local country schools. He graduated from Parker Rural High School with the class of 1936. On June 12, 1938, he married his high school sweetheart, Muriel Crisler, in Livermore, California. After a brief time in California, they lived most of their over 70 years of marriage in the Parker and LaCygne, area. Olen spent most of his life farming and raising cattle which he dearly loved. Caring for or simply watching his cattle was a great part of his life. They became parents to four children. They also give a niece and nephew, Carol and Don Woolever a home after the death of their parents. Olen was a longtime member of the Christian Church, a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for many years and a member of the Cadmus Grange for over 50 years. He was a loving and devoted husband, Dad and Grandpa who always enjoyed being around family, he especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son-in-law, Carl Eaton, 4 brothers, John, Lee, Rolla and Robert (Dutch); 3 sisters, Florence Page, Minta Hampton and Eva Page. Survivors include his 4 children, one son, Jerry O. (Kathleen) Hampton, 3 daughters, Deloris K. (Larry) Coffin, Connie L. (George) Eaton, all of LaCygne, Kansas and Vickie L. Eaton, Coal City, Illinois. 9 Grandchildren; Pam Haupt, Shannon Litts, Tim Coffin, Kristy Tatum, Lori Markham, Jeff Hampton, Kerry Schulz, Brian Eaton and Joel Eaton; 19 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great Great Grandchildren; a niece, Carol Gardner and nephew, Don Woolever and many more nieces and nephews and friends. The most common comment heard when describing Olen, "He is one of the greatest men I've ever known." Olen had a winning smile for everybody and will be greatly missed by all. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, August 1, 2011 at the First Christian Church, LaCygne, Kansas. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8:00 PM, Sunday at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, LaCygne, Kansas. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church, LaCygne.
