Mildred Louise Kauffman Shaffer died August 18, 2005 at Antelope Valley Hospital, Lancaster, California. She was born July 13, 1919 on a farm near Amsterdam, Missouri, the daughter of Charlie & Effie Lewis Kauffman. She graduated from High School in 1937 and attended one year of Business School in Sedalia, Missouri. She worked in Kansas City, Missouri for Dills-Monarch United Chemical Company and U.S. Army Engineers who transferred her to Omaha, Nebraska. She joined the U.S. Navy Waves on October 16, 1943. After attending boot camp at Hunter College in Bronx, NY. and Yoeman's School in Cedar Falls, Iowa, she was stationed at Com Gulf Sea Frontier in Miami, Florida before joining the first contingent of Waves to be stationed at the Naval Air Station in Kahului, Maui, Hawaii. She was discharged in January of 1946 and worked for a year in Long Beach, California before being hired by Bechtel Corporation where she worked at their projects in various locations. She later worked for Ober Construction Corp in California for twenty-three and a half years. She married Walter Elwin Shaffer on December 20, 1955 in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. He preceded her in death in 1975. She lived in the San Fernando Valley until April 1982 when she returned to Amsterdam, Missouri, later moving to Butler, Missouri in 1998. She was preceded in death also by one brother, Raymond Kauffman and one sister, Opal Fish. Survivors include one sister, Dora Peak of Long Beach, California; several nieces & nephews and great nieces and nephews. Graveside memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, October 27, 2005 at West Point Cemetery, rural Amsterdam, Missouri.
