Louis John "L.J." Oliver, 90, of Mound City, Kansas, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005 in Johnson County, Texas. He was born April 27, 1915 in Johnson County, Texas, the son of John Louis and Frances Prince Oliver. After graduating from the local schools he went to work in the oil fields. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army in the 38811-2500 12th Field Hospital. His unit landed from England at night on Normandy Beach and walked to trucks which took them to Cherbourg. They crossed the Rhine River and treated hundreds of casualties from the Battle of the Bulge. They were glad to see our bombers come after the storms cleared. He returned from the war and went to work for the Pontiac Refinery (later Champlin Oil) in Corpus Christi, Texas until retirement. He married Louise Weaver on January 31, 1947 at Mound City, Kansas. They lived in Corpus Christi, Texas until his retirement and then lived in Cleberne, Texas and Mound City, Kansas until Louise's death on February 28, 1998. He continued to live in Mound City and rarely missed drinking coffee with friends at Jayhawk Inn each morning and enjoyed all of them. He made frequent trips to Texas to visit his double cousins Fred Prince and Bertha Todd in Alvarado. He fell and broke a hip and they took good care of him for 10 months until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, his parents and three sisters, Rosa, Alli Mae and Viola. Survivors include Louise's nieces and nephews; Maurice Brown and wife, Nadine, Centerville, Kansas; Lela Gene Hinkle and husband, Pete, Iola, Kansas; Velma Jean Brown, Fort Scott, Kansas; Mary E. Brown, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Shirley Brotherton, Shreveport, Louisiana and Charles Weaver, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 23, 2005 at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Mound City, Kansas. Contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery, Mound City, Kansas.
