Lois Althea Nichols Marquis, age 90, La Cygne, Kansas died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday May 7, 2014 at the home of her daughter, Cynthia and son-in-law Brad Metcalf. Lois was born on January 26, 1924 to John Edwin Whitlock Nichols and Nellie Mae Kasiah Nichols. She was educated at Sunny Ridge Elementary and Smith School and graduated from La Cygne High School in 1942. She married Harley Wayne Marquis on October 20, 1942 at the Methodist Church Parsonage in La Cygne. To this union four children were born. They made their home in rural Miami County where they were engaged in a lifetime of farming. Lois was a loved and respected member of the community, providing love, friendship and leadership in any way she could. She was a member of the New Lancaster United Methodist Church and UMW, serving as president from 1993 to 2003. She sold Avon for over thirty years, and a member of the New Lancsaster EHU for forty years. Lois and husband Wayne were leaders of the Sunny Ridge 4-H Club for over twenty years. She was a fifty year member of the New Lancaster Grange #223 until it dissolved in 2002. She also enjoyed being involved in the Quilting Club of the New Lancaster Community. Lois was a devoted wife, mother, grandma and great grandma. Her grandchildren have many happy memories spent with their Grandma. These include: the yearly Easter weekend where they took nature walks in the timber and had scavenger hunts that ended with a wiener roast, Easter egg hunt and the Easter Story. Easter was a very special time to Lois. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wayne, sister, Sarah Lindsey, and brother John Nichols. She is survived by three daughters: Donna Reynolds and husband Archie, Evelyn Ernst and husband Eddie, Cynthia Metcalf and husband Brad, a son, Robert Marquis, sister in law, Elsie Cree, brother in law, Raymond Miller, fifteen grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren, several special nieces and nephews an many long time family friends and neighbors. Funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the New Lancaster United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the New Lancaster Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 PM Friday at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel The family suggests contributions to the New Lancaster United Methodist Church.
