Leo Brownback

Leo Brownback, son of William H. and Josie Browning Brownback was born June 21, 1914 near Centerville, Kansas. Leo grew up on the family farm southwest of Centerville, helping his loved ones with the many joys of farming. He attended the Oakwood Country School as a young man and enjoyed learning the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. He would either walk, or ride his mule named Ben to school. Leo saw many changes in his lifetime with the progression of farm equipment, electricity, vehicles and indoor plumbing. After taking the train to Colorado and California a few times and filling his pocket with a few coins he decided moving back home might not be a bad idea. He continued his lifelong dream of farming with his loving bride, Mable McRae. They were married in Mound City on May 2, 1943. Mable preceded him in death on October 24, 2008 having a wonderful life together for 65 years. Their children Loyd, Herbert and Lois were blessed to have such wonderful parents and be brought up in the Wesley Chapel neighborhood where faith, family and friends were the focus. Leo was a member of the Wesley Chapel church and later transferred his membership to the Mound City United Methodist Church when Wesley Chapel closed its doors. Leo was a faithful member and worker at Wesley Chapel and in the community helping out and working together to help his neighbor's, family and friends. Leo had a joy for nature enjoying "the beauty of the season, the coming of a new day, the joy of physical toil and the aroma of the harvest." Leo was preceded in death by his parents, William and Josie, brothers, Orville and wife Leora, Otis and wife Annie, Earl and wife Kizia, Clyde and wife Shirley. Two sisters, Alice Smith and husband Roy, Sr., Doris Erhart and husband Clifford. He leaves his children, Loyd and wife Mary of Mound City, Herbert and wife Mary Lou, LaCygne and Lois and husband Dale of Blue Mound. His grandkids and great grandkids were his pride and joy; four grandsons, John and wife Jeana, Chad, Chris and Jason along with two granddaughters Michelle and Melissa. Leo had two great grandsons, Colton and Trevor and one great-granddaughter, Rachel. He also leaves many other nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. He loved his family and friends dearly. Leo left this world to be with his heavenly father on March 11, 2012 at the Prescott Country View Nursing home where he received love and compassion since his entry date of June 11, 2007. The family thanks all of the very caring administration and staff for their never-ending dedication to the man with a beautiful smile and a heart of gold otherwise known as "sweetheart." Services will be held on Wednesday, March 14 at 11:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Mound City, Kansas. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 13 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Schneider Funeral Home Mound City Chapel. Burial will follow services at Woodland Cemetery.
