Laura Helen Johnson Wright, age 91, of Mound City, Kansas died Saturday January 31, 2009 at the Residencies in Pleasanton, Kansas. She was born March 31, 1917 at Mound City, Kansas the daughter of Hiram Albert and Grace May Cook Johnson. She attended Mound City Schools graduating from Mound city High School in 1935. She then attended the University of Kansas, receiving many honors, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music in 1941. Laura was united in marriage to Wayne Wright of Scott City, Kansas on June 28, 1941 at Blacksburg, Virginia. He preceded her in death in October of 2000. Laura Helen was a homemaker and music teacher for many years. Due to Wayne's job as an engineer with Hercules Powder, the couple lived in Blacksburg, Virginia, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Hercules, California and Salt Lake City, Utah. Upon retirement, they made their home in Mound City. She was a member of the Mound City Federated Church sharing her many talents. She and Wayne shared a set of English Hand Bells and formed a group of young women of the church. These women were her pride and joy. The "Sugar Belles", as they were fondly known, performed Christmas concerts, and toured eastern Kansas from Olathe to Fort Scott for approximately twenty years. She enjoyed playing cards being a member of the Jolly Dozen bridge club. Laura Helen also shared her love of music by giving piano lessons to youth and adults. Also preceding her were her parents, two sons, Karl, Skipper, Wright and Alfred Stephen Wright, a sister Eugenia Turner and a brother Harris Albert Johnson. She is survived by two stepgrandsons, Scott Camp and Lisa of Ames, Iowa and Wade Camp and a step grand daughter Stephanie Allen, and a caregiver Verna Lee Foerschler. Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday February 3, 2009 at the Federated Church in Mound City, Kansas. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery. Mrs. Wright will lie in state from 12 noon to 7 PM Monday at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City, Kansas. Contributions are suggested to the Federated Church.
