Jean Smith, 67, of Elsmore, Kansas, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at her home. She was born July 29, 1943 in Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Lester and Minnie McKaine Smith. She was employed as a housekeeper at the University of Kansas prior to retirement. Jean was an avid collector of Elvis memorabilia and also had a collection of over 200 cookie jars as well as numerous other collections. She enjoyed kids and became the neighborhood "Granny" She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Sonny and Charles Smith and one sister, Roberta Layton. Survivors include her good friend, Connie Kirch of the home; one daughter, Hope Barnum of Elsmore, Kansas; two sisters, Shirley Henry of Salina, Kansas and Johana Luce of Kansas City, Kansas; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 7, 2011 at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Pleasanton, Kansas. Visitation will be from 2-4 PM, Sunday at the Chapel.
