James New

James Beauford New, 81, passed on August 26, 2007. He was born April 7, 1926 to Thomas Beauford and Lora Irene Hewitt New in Mound City. He graduated from Mound City High School in 1944 and joined the US Navy. Attended Washburn university for ½ year then to the Great Lakes for training. Served as a Petty Officer 3rd Class aboard the USS Eberle DD430. Received American Area Camp Medal, European-African-Mid East Area Camp Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Camp Medal, Point System and World War II Victory Medal. Was discharged at Charleston, South Carolina in 1946. April 7, 1948 he was married to Bonnie Jean Scott in Mound City. He worked for the US Postal Service in Mound City and Fort Scott retiring in 1981 with 35½ years of government service. He was a 60 year member of the American Legion Hewitt New Post, Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, Past Patron of the Eastern Star. As a young man he was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge. He played Santa Claus several years for Mound City Santa Claus day. JB enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and yard work. Most of all he enjoyed his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, baby daughter Vickie Lee and baby grandson Thomas Kent Slocum. He is survived by his wife Bonnie; children Scott New and Merleyne, Ramona Slocum and Bryan; grandchildren Rebecca New, Tonya Carpenter and Chad, Heather Best and Trevor, Chris Slocum; great grandchildren Kadence and Kanyon Carpenter; brothers Charles and Wilbur New; Sisters Alberta Murray, Charlotte Dunavan, Sandra Snow, Marsha White, Janet Keating and Joetta Marti; nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. JB will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 30, 2007 at the Wall Street Church, Mound City, Kansas. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Mound City, Kansas. Contributions are suggested to Hope Lodge, 1100 Pennsylvania, Kansas City, MO 64104.
