James Bullock

January 13, 1911 — July 30, 2009

James Chester Bullock, better known as Chet, passed over July 30, 2009 at his home in LaCygne with his wife and family at his side. God answered his prayers that he and his wife Betty complete his life journey together. Chet was born in Garden City, Missouri on Friday January 13, 1911 to Gene and Flossie Bullock . He had two older sisters, Louise and Peggy. Both preceded him in death. Two younger sisters, Alene and Florence, also preceded him in death. At a young age he moved with the family to Lawrence, Kansas and then to Drexel, Missouri. He attended school in Drexel and called that his home town. Chet married Opal Hunzicker. To this union two children, Sidney E. and Susie E., were born. The marriage ended in divorce. He married Betty James and became Pop to Kathy Cook and husband Michael Naumes, Mike James and and wife Debbie, Pat Hinson and Ron Smith, Edith James and husband Joe Goodenough, Susie Clearwater and husband Gary, twelve grandchildren, twenty grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He will be missed as well by many nieces and nephews. Chet wore many hats - barber, butcher, truck driver, farmer, salesman, and businessman. For many years, he operated the Gamble Store in Drexel and wrote a column for the Drexel Star. You never knew who would be featured in that column. No one was exempt. And he loved to fish. He and friend, Jack Unzicker, went to Canada fishing every year for twenty-six years. Sometimes buddies went along but Chet and Jack always stayed the course. Oh, the fish stories that came back. They became the basis for many "True Fish Stories" columns. When Chet retired, he and Betty moved to Lake of the Ozarks and built their home. He was very proud of that accomplishment. But, as age made those hills steeper, they decided to move to LaCygne to be closer to family. Chet could always be relied on to assist with worthwhile projects. He was a member of Drexel Lions Club for many years and helped with their many community projects. He was a member of LaCygne Masonic Lodge for sixty-two and one-half years. He was very proud of that. You were my friend and my companion Through good times and bad. My friend, my buddy Through times happy and sad. Beside me you stood. Beside me you walked. You were there to listen and there to talk. With happiness, smiles with pain and tears. You were there for me. Thanks for the years. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 AM Monday August 3, 2009 at the Jingo Cemetery near LaCygne. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 PM Sunday August 2 at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in LaCygne. The family suggests contributions to the Olathe Hospice or East Central Kansas Area on Aging.
