Irmal Smith

Irmal Irene Smith, age 96, of Blue Mound, Kansas passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Prescott Country View Nursing Home. She was born on April 1, 1916 near Uniontown, Kansas the daughter of Oscar and Grace Boileau Cowan. She attended schools in Bourbon, Crawford and Neosho Counties graduating from Grant Township Rural High School Class of 1933. She taught grade school for two years before marrying Louis Smith on August 31, 1935 at Vinita, Oklahoma. They farmed and ranched in the Mapleton, Kansas area until 1951. They moved to Blue Mound and owned and operated the Blue Mound Tavern for 42 years. She was known in the area as Granny or Grandma Pie for all the wonderful baking she did. Irmal and Louis enjoyed dancing in their younger days as well as fishing. Louis preceded her in death on July 22, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son Charles "Chuck" Smith, two sisters, Metta and Ruth Walker, a brother, Buck Cowan, and a grandson Terry Smith. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Michael and Tim of Blue Mound, a son Dan Smith and Eleanor of Fort Scott, Kansas, daughter in law, Delores Smith of Tonganoxie, Kansas, two grandsons, Ed Lewis and Mary, Gary Smith and Teresa, three granddaughters: Kandi White, Patricia Fee and Brian, and Debra Miller and Fred, four sisters: Mary Dahmer, Opal Brillhart, Pauline Norris, and Charlene Bruns, one brother, Bill Cowan, ten great grandchildren: Danielle Miller, Randy Smith, Dustin, Katy, Craig and Daniel Fee, Justin and Jessica White, and Nathan and Amy Smith, and two great great grandchildren, Lily Miller and Carter White. Funeral service 11 AM Thursday, Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. Burial Sunny Slope Cemetery. Visitation 5 to 7 PM Wednesday, Mound City Chapel.
