Henry Joseph "Sonny" Karle, Jr., age 85, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2008 in Mena, Arkansas. He was born in Flushing, New York on October 15, 1922 to the late Henry Joseph Karle, Sr. and the late Marguerite Seaman Karle. He graduated from Great Neck High School in Great Neck, New York, from Winona Teachers College in Winona, Minnesota, and from Columbia University in New York City. He joined the army and was a veteran of World War II and Korea. He had 33 years in the military both active and reserve. He retired in 1975 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Henry was an educator by profession. He taught for 16 years in the Topeka Public School system. He was a junior high and high school principal at Jefferson County North in Winchester, Kansas for 8 years. He finished his teaching career at an alternative school in Farmers Branch, Texas where he taught for 5 years. He moved to Mena, Arkansas in 1984 and joined the American Legion Post #18. Henry was Post Commander, District Commander, and a member of the Board of Trustees. He was united in marriage to Betty James of Pleasanton, Kansas at the First Presbyterian Church on October 18, 1952. They had 5 children together. Henry is survived by his wife, Betty of Mena, Arkansas; son, Mark and Deanna Karle of Topeka, Kansas; son, Tim and Joyce Karle of Jefferson City, Missouri; daughter, Connie Daniels of Olathe, Kansas; daughter, Jeanie Karle of Mena, Arkanas; son, John and Keri Karle of Columbia, Missouri, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church, Pleasanton, Kansas.
