Helen Louise Barnes, age 92, of Mound City, Kansas, died at The Residencies of Pleasanton on Tuesday, April 2, 2019. She was born on March 23, 1927 at Mexico City, Missouri the daughter of James"Jack" and Carrie Miksch Hendrix. Her mother died when Helen was ten years old. As a single parent, her father providing for all her needs. She graduated from Leonard, Missouri High School as salutatorian. She then attended the University of Missouri and received a Bachelor''s Degree in Home Economics. She moved to Mound City and rented a room from Henry and Gladys Carbon while working at the Linn County Extension Office. She met John Eldon Barnes. The two were united in marriage on July 23, 1950. He preceded her in death on March 21, 2010. She was a member of the Mound City United Methodist Church, volunteering in various capacities. Helen served on the library board, was chairperson of the Sugar Mound Arts and Crafts Festival, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as District Aide from 1963 to 1964; Past President of the Kansas Association of Extension Home Economists; received the National Association of Home Economists Distinguished Service Award; the Alpha Phi Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi Meritorious Service Award and the Pomona Grange Award for Public Service. She volunteered in the Youth Friends and Reading Program for Jayhawk USD 346 as well as cooking at Shalom Ministries. She was also preceded in death by her father, a grandson, Jeremy and three brothers: James L, Harold and Eddie Hendrix. Helen is survived by three sons: James Eldon Barnes and Debbie; Joe Lee Barnes and Arloa; and Jay Howard Barnes; a daughter Kerry Ellen Morrell and Richard; twelve grandchildren: Jason, Tonya, Lindsey, Joshua, Connor, JR., Corrie, Aaron, Tanner, Taryn, Mike and Jennie; and eight great grandchildren: Reilly, Collin, Liam, Liliana, Harrison, Zella, Aidan and James. Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Monday April 8, 2019 at the Mound City United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 pm Sunday, April 7 at the Church. Contributions are suggested to Linn County 4-H Council or Mound City Library.
