Harley Marquis

Harley "Wayne" Marquis, age 88 of LaCygne, Kansas died peacefully surrounded by his family Saturday January 28, 2012 at the home of his daughter Cindy and son- in law Brad Metcalf. He was born on February 2, 1923, the son of E.T. and Anna Lime Marquis at their home in rural Miami County. He was educated at Sunny Ridge elementary school and graduated from high school in Drexel, Missouri in 1941. He married Lois Althea Nichols on October 20, 1942 at the Methodist Parsonage in LaCygne, Kansas. To this union 4 children were born. They made their home in rural Miami County where they were engaged in a life-time of farming. He was a loved and respected member of the community, providing friendship and leadership in any way he could. In 1956 he was elected Miami Township Constable and in 1964 he was elected Miami Township Trustee and held office for 43 years. He was a member of the New Lancaster Grange #223 and served several terms as Master. He and Lois served as leaders for the Sunny Ridge 4-H Club for over 20 years. During this time he helped with numerous activities at the Miami County Fair. He was a charter member of the Miami County Fire District #1 serving from 1976 to the present. He served on the Miami Township Election board many years and as Miami County Assessor for Miami Township. Wayne was a loving and devoted husband. The most wonderful dad to his children, who felt they could go to him for anything at anytime. He loved being the greatest grandpa in the world to his 15 grandchildren and his 27 great-grandchildren. He never met a stranger and everyone was his friend. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Beulah Miller. He is survived by his wife Lois, three daughters; Donna Reynolds and husband Archie, Evelyn Ernst and husband Eddie, Cynthia Metcalf and husband Bradley, and a son Robert Marquis, a sister Elsie Cree, 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, several special nieces, nephews and cousins and many longtime family friends and neighbors. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday January 31, 2012 at the New Lancaster Untied Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 PM Monday January 30, 2012 at the Schneider Funeral Home LaCygne Chapel. Burial will be in the New Lancaster Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Hospice of Kansas/ Mid West or the New Lancaster United Methodist Church left in C/O of Schneider Funeral Home PO box 304 LaCygne, Kansas 66040.
