Georgia Farris

February 14, 1955 — February 24, 2015

Georgia Lou Farris, age 60, La Cygne, Kansas passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Georgia Lou Farris was born February 14, 1955 - Valentine's Day! That was a most appropriate date for her birth because Georgia has been a sweetheart her entire life. Named after our parents (George and Lucy) Georgia Lou lived an exceptionally normal life for a baby born with Down's. In the fifties era, these children were seldom kept at home. There was in fact a stigma associated with Down's such that many were hidden away. Georgia was never hidden. She was always front and center in our family. We have always been proud and grateful that our parents brought their beautiful little daughter home and took on all the challenges that come with raising a child with Down's. As the youngest of five children, Georgia never lacked for attention. She was so small and adorable, it was hard not to spoil her. She did have a mischievous side. From time to time, Georgia would manage to slip away from us siblings and head up town. She would usually stop at the Dairy Queen for a coke, then on to Elliot's Grocery to pick up her snack of choice. She sometimes made it as far as Vawter's Drug Store before her father could be notified and dispatch one of us to retrieve our little angel. Then we were all faced with the daunting task of trying to explain, just how it was that we had managed to lose track of her in the first place. Us kids were vindicated for our youthful negligence, when one day while Mom and Dad were shopping with Georgia, they were shocked to discover she had selected a cute little tricycle and ridden it out the door-right under their noses. Giving awesome hugs was one of Georgia's trademarks. She would sometimes pick a stranger from a crowd and bestow her hug before we had the opportunity to determine if it was appropriate or not. It always was. Many times it was apparent from the response, that Georgia had seen a need we were blind to. Reverend Curry always looked forward to his "Georgia hug" at Sunday morning Service. We take comfort in knowing he is now warmed by them again. Georgia Lou accomplished a lot within the confines of her limitations. She learned to write all of her letters and numbers. She would spend hours doing her "homework" which consisted of writing out all our names, phone numbers and addresses. From time to time she would be inspired to add a few items to mom's grocery list. Georgia also competed at Special Olympic events, winning numerous ribbons and trophies. She loved to play basketball could turn her back to the net and make the shot many times in a row. All of us who knew and loved Georgia will have our own unique Georgia stories and Georgia sayings to share. There is one story that is classic Georgia. It occurred on a special Sunday when Bob and his family took Georgia to church with them. As is the custom in the Catholic Church, members stop to genuflect (kneel) face the altar and make the sign of the cross before leaving. Georgia observed what others were doing, knelt, crossed herself then rose giving her usual double fist pump and her signature "Yes!!!" which brought laughter and applause from those around her. Now Sweet Georgia has slipped away from us again, this time to be with The Lord. We give thanks to God for allowing us to be graced by her presence for these past sixty years and pray that we will be persuaded by her example to live our lives with love, joy and integrity of spirit; so that she might be as proud of us, as we have always been proud of her. Georgia was preceded in death by her sister Janice Marie, brother Ronald, niece Teresa Hays, nephew Ayden Bryson, father George and her mother Lucy. Georgia is survived by: sister Barbara Hays and family, sister Judy Medcalf, husband Bill and family, brother Robert Farris, wife Lee and family, as well as many nieces and nephews who adored her and innumerable friends. Georgia will be remembered for many things but greatest of all, that she loved deeply and unconditionally; withholding nothing. Until we meet again our sweet Georgia Peach, we leave you in the Lord's arms and we will cherish your memory in our hearts forever. Yes!!!!
