Gary Dean Wimmer, 67, Fulton, Kan., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013. He was born May 24, 1945 in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Joseph and Dorothy Dawson Wimmer. He married Sheila Lynn Bradford on Aug. 4, 1970. To this union, four children were born. Gary received a bachelor's degree in English, master's degree in Speech and Theatre, and an Education Specialist Degree in Administration, all from Pittsburg State University. He served in the U.S. Navy in the late 1960s. Gary worked in various capacities of education, from instructor to superintendent. He began his teaching career at Louisburg High School, and then went on to teach at Fort Scott High School. He served as superintendent of schools for Jayhawk-Linn, USD #346, in Mound City, Kan., for 22 years. After retiring, he continued his teaching career with positions at Nevada High School, Fort Scott Community College, and Crowder Community College. He was a member of Kansas National Education Association (KNEA). He was greatly involved in Echoes of the Trail, the Community Council on the Performing Arts (CCPA ) in Nevada and had a passion for vegetable gardening. He was a member of the Fort Scott Church of Christ at 1900 South Margrave Street. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Gary Thompson. He is survived by his wife Sheila of the home; daughters Courtney Meyers and husband Daniel, Lubbock, Texas, Gaea Wimmer and fiancé Matthew Hock, Starkville, Miss., and Sheridan Wimmer, Manhattan, Kan.; a son, Zach Wimmer, Fulton, Kan.; granddaughters, Isabel and Amelia Meyers; two brothers, Ron Wimmer (Linda) and Phillip Wimmer (Nancy); and a sister, Kay Thompson. He also had many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel in Pleasanton, Kan. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 at the Fort Scott Church of Christ.
