Eugene "Vernon" Speakes, 97, of Prescott, Kansas, died Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the Prescott Countryview Nursing Home. He was born May 12, 1911 in Hume, Missouri, the son of Clyde and Jane Reynolds Speakes. He graduated from Hume High School and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College. He married Mary Rebecca Bell September,1933 at Mound City, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 16, 2004. Vernon was a member of the United Methodist Church, Prescott, Kansas where he taught Sunday School for a number of years. He was a lifetime member of the Prescott Countryview Nursing Home board, a member of the State & National Grange, the Republican Committee, past director at Prescott State Bank and the REA Board; Past President of Farm Bureau and Friendship Villa. Vernon helped many students with scholarships through the years. He was preceded in death also by his parents and three sisters, Ruby, Ruth & Helen. Survivors include several nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, June 2, 2008 at the Prescott United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Contributions are suggested to the Countryview Nursing Home or Prescott United Methodist Church.
