Elwyn Bruce, John Carlson, age 82, of Shawnee Mission, Kansas and Sugar Valley Lake, passed away on Saturday September 15, 2012 at Research Medical Center. He was born on April 19, 1930 at Chicago, Illinois the son of Sherwin and Vivian Cook Carlson. He graduated from Deer River High School in 1947. He was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the United States Army. He married Marcella Zimmerman on February 10, 1951 at Holdingford, Minnesota. She preceded him in death on March 3, 2012. John worked as a contract negotiator for Burlington Northern Railroad before retirement. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Mound City and the NRA. He enjoyed flying radio controlled airplanes and shooting skeet and trap. He especially enjoyed the time spent at Sugar Valley, whether playing golf, fishing or just relaxing. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clair. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Benham and husband, Tim, and three grandsons: David, Samuel, and Timothy Benham. A funeral Mass will be held 10 AM Saturday, September 29, 1012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Mound City, Kansas. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
