Elizabeth Shelton Ross, age 98, LaCygne, Kansas died July 30, 2012 at the Bates County Hospital, Butler, Missouri. Elizabeth was the youngest child of James S. and Osa May Creager Shelton born on December 15, 1913 at Pleasanton, Kansas. While still a baby, the family moved to LaCygne, and she spent her entire lifetime in the area. She attended LaCygne Grade and High School, graduating in 1931 with a Normal Training Certificate. Her teaching career began in a one room school and ended forty-five years later after teaching in elementary schools in Kansas and Missouri. During those teaching years she attended summer, night and Saturday classes at Pittsburg State University, where she earned a Bachelor and Master Degree in Education graduating with honors. She married Kenneth K. Ross in 1943 while he was stationed at Blythe Air Base, Arizona. She rode troop trains at Christmas and summer vacations to spend time with Kenneth at various air bases over the United States. After Kenneth's four years of service ended, they lived on the Ross Family Farm for thirty years. Kenneth farmed and Elizabeth taught school. A coal company purchased the farm and they moved in town and built a home. Elizabeth retired from teaching in 1977. She and Kenneth spent seventeen winters enjoying the Texas sunshine, and traveling through Europe, returning many times to Scotland and Ireland where Elizabeth's ancestors came from to America in the 1500's. Elizabeth's sister Minnie accompanied Elizabeth on several trips. Kenneth died in 2003. Elizabeth continued to live at home enjoying her flowers and yard. She had an artist's eye for color, as could be seen in her oil paintings, quilts and flowers. Also preceding her in death was a sister, Ethel Hutson, a brother, James Calvin Shelton, and a nephew, Robert Potter. Survivors include a sister Minnie Holman, a niece Joan Potter Staton, great niece, Jeannie Staton Pappas, two great nephews, Steven Staton and Michael Staton, Kenny's niece, Susan Ross Pease and nephews, William R.
