Edward Lee Umphenour, age 90, of Pleasanton, Kansas, passed away on Sunday December 9, 2012 at Prescott Country View. He was born on July 27, 1922 at Pleasanton, the son of Walter and Anna Belle Ralph Umphenour. He was a Pleasanton High School Class of 1941 graduate. He married Katherine Dunavan on Dec. 24, 1942 near his parent''s hill top home in 60 degree weather. Katherine passed away at their home on Dec 8, 2005. Also preceding Edward were his parents, a brother Melvern, and son Wayne Lester Umphenour in 1969 and daughter-in-law Michelle Umphenour. He was a member of the Pleasanton First Christian Church. Edward served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent; also he was an Elder and Deacon. He served in the Christian Men''s Fellowship where he held many offices. Edward was a long time member of the Pleasanton Saddle Club. The older kids will remember when Edward was regularly active on Tony in the timed events joining with many of his friends competing on Friday nights. In the 1950''s Edward Lee started in traveling to timed events, Edward and his entire family first joined the new Mid Eastern Kansas Western Horsemen Association maintaining their membership until the youngest stopped showing during the 1980''s. Edward served in 4-H as a community leader, many different livestock project leadership and various other parental capacities. Edward served on both the Mound Valley and Pleasanton School Boards. He had staring roles in several parental school plays. In 2005 Edward and Katherine were awarded the Pleasanton High school Booster Club Award for their encouragement of the youth by their constant support of the school and its sport and arts programs. Edward served both Green Valley 4-H Club and the Valley Rangers 4-H Club as Community leader and many livestock project leaders. He served in several official Farm Bureau capacities. He was a favorite Santa Clause over many years and locations in Linn County. He was as happy as the kids he served. He is survived by four sons and two daughters: Edward Lee and Jeannie Umphenour, Deanna and DeWayne Fuhrman, Gary and Sheilah Umphenour, Randy and Robin Umphenour, Kevin and Debi Umphenour, Kristie and Paul McKee, a sister Cleta Fern Murray, 31 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral service will be 11 AM Saturday December 15, 2012 at the Pleasanton First Christian Church. Burial will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM Friday December 14, 2012 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory Pleasanton Chapel.
