Carol Jean Graham, 88, of Mound City, Kansas, died Tuesday October 9, 2012 at Fort Scott Manor, Fort Scott, Kansas. She was born on May 14, 1924 the daughter of Emery and Frances "June" Holt Dewey at her parents home in Mound City, Kansas. She graduated from Mound City High School in 1942 and attended Business School in Kansas City, Missouri. She married Don Herchel McCarty in 1944 and to this union four children were born. He preceded her in death in 1969. She married William Graham on January 21, 1973. They made their home in Fort Scott, Kansas. He preceded her in death in 1984. She was hostess at the Red Barn in Fort Scott, Kansas in 1971 during the time they were filming the movie "The Learning Tree". Carol Jean later worked as activities director for the Medical Lodge Nursing Home in Fort Scott from 1975-1980 and the Mound City Nursing Home in 1988. She then worked at the Foodfair store in Mound City in 1996 and was a volunteer for Senior Meals delivery from 1996-1999 at Bunker Hill in Mound City.She was a member of the Mound City Methodist Church where she was baptized and sang in the choir for years and also a member of the VFW and Order of Eastern Star in Mound City.She loved sports events at Jayhawk Linn and Pleasanton Schools and was a avid fan of KU and the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals. Carol Jean drew much of her strength from her church, singing in the choir and her life long friends in Mound City and Linn County. She loved animals, especially cats and dogs and was scared to death of tornadoes after one took her home in Topeka, always making her children and pets go to the basement during storms. She was preceded in death also by her parents; a brother, Vern Dell Dewey ,a daughter in law, Ronnie McCarty and brother-in-law, Russell McCarty. Survivors include two sons; Larry Dell McCarty of Wailuku, Hawaii and Gary Andrew McCarty of Chula Vista, California; two daughters; Nancy June McCarty Johnson and husband, David of Cameron, Missouri and Dawn Jean McCarty Goddard and husband, Jeff of Pleasanton, Kansas; grandchildren; Heather, Michah, Marisa, Melieka, Shelli, Anne, and Kyle and wife, Teri and six great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Woodland Cemetery, Mound City, Kansas. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to service time at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Mound City United Methodist Church.
