Billy Joe Hewitt, age 65, of Chanute, Kansas and formerly of LaCygne, Kansas, died Monday, May 30, 2005 at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas. Billy was born on August 6, 1939 in Miami County, Kansas to F. M. Jack and Velma Rogers Hewitt. Billy joined the U.S. Navy in 1957 and obtained the rank of Signalman 1st Class. on December 13, 1959, he married Joyce Terry at the LaCygne Christian Church in LaCygne, Kansas. Over the years Billy worked as a truck driver for Victorian marble, John Troutman, and Southwest Freight Lines. Later he worked for S.P. Telecom that later became Qwest Communications as a Senior Planning Engineer retiring in July of 2004. He was a member of the LaCygne Christian Church and attended the Living Word Assembly Church in Chanute, Kansas. He was also a member of the Meadowlark Sams Camping Club. He was past mayor and city councilman of LaCygne. He was also involved in two phases of Kansas City Power and Light. He was instrumental in establishing the city park at LaCygne, bringing cable television to LaCygne and setting up the LaCygne Ambulance service. Billy was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; one son, Chris Hewitt; one daughter, Cheri Bunch and her husband, Scotty, all of Chanute, Kansas; two brothers, Jack Hewitt of Malden, Illinois and Larry Hewitt of Olathe, Kansas; four sisters, Virginia McGee and Joyce Hewitt, both of LaCygne, Kansas, Judy Green of Shell Knob, Missouri and Dorothy Combs of Shawnee, Kansas; five grandchildren, Josh, Ashli, Caleb, Luke and Josia"Joe". Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, June 3, 2005 at the LaCygne Christian Church, LaCygne, Kansas. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, LaCygne. Contributions are suggested to either the Chanute Christian Academy, Fire Escape Coffee House, or Sweet Mercies.
