Anne Gove

d. November 6, 2008

Anne Underhill Gove of Mound City, KS, died at her home on Thursday, November 6th, 2008 at the age of 98. Family members and close friends were present to say goodbye to beloved "Auntie Anne." The widow of Howard W. "Jack" Gove of Mound City, whom she married in Olathe, KS, on October 7th, 1933, Anne Lauretta Underhill was born in Mound City to Harlan W. and Franc Coe Underhill on March 9th, 1910. Anne was educated at Mound City Grade School, Lawrence Jr. High, Kansas University and Brownell Hall in Omaha, NE. Three years after their marriage, Jack and Anne built the home in Mound City in which they lived for the rest of their lives. A pioneer businesswoman, Anne owned Anne Underhill's Clothing Store in Mound City for more than twenty years, and Blue Mound Dress Shop for over a dozen years. Jack, who was a past mayor of Mound City, owned a tire Store and later Mound City Lumber and Grain until his retirement in 1971. The Goves loved weekends and holidays at their Lake of the Ozarks cabin and traveled widely, spending winters in Palo Alto, CA, with Anne's maternal cousins for many years. They were members of the Kansas City Club. The couple had no children of their own, but were almost surrogate parents to countless young people, both family and others, over the years. They were very modest about their contributions, only occasionally admitting to having "helped" with education or emergencies. Many charities and good causes were also beneficiaries of their generosity, some without even being aware of it. In that same spirit, it was Anne's wish that any memorial should be in the form of a gift to the Underhill-Gove Scholarship Foundation that will provide scholarship funds for deserving local young people. Anne was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Sue Underhill Jones, and a brother Harrison Daniel Underhill and wife, Mildred. Anne is survived by cousins Lela Streeter Coe Meyer and her children Anne M. Richards & husband John, Katherine M. Lockhardt and husband, Jim, and Dr.Tim Meyer and wife, Ann, all of the Palo Alto, CA area. Also surviving are cousins Suzanne Cecil Alexander and husband, Robert of Irving, TX, Deborah Cecil Youngling and husband Mitch of Van Etten, NY, Sue Slocum Houlston and husband Russell of Walnut Creek, CA. and their families, as well as Jack's niece Sally Kemp and husband Garry of Camdenton, MO and their family, and a special care giver Cheryl Simons. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday November 15, 2008 at the Woodland Cemetery in Mound City. Friends may call from 9:30 AM until service time at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City, Kansas. The family suggests contributions to the Underhill-Gove Scholarship Foundation, and can be sent in care of Coffel-Schneider, Box J, Mound City, Kansas, 66056. On line condolences for the family can be left at www.coffelschneider.com. Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider, Mound City.
