Alfred "Al" William Nichols, 84, of Prescott, Kansas, died Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Prescott Country View Nursing Home. He was born May 9, 1925, the son of Ray Edwin and Bertha Mae Clay Nichols. He married Fern Maske on August 5, 1944 at Independence, Kansas. Al was employed with P&M Coal Company, retiring in 1988. He also worked as a welder and farmed and ranched. He enjoyed riding horses and was an active member of the Pleasanton Saddle club, enjoyed hunting pheasants and coon and coyote hunting. In his younger years, he played minor league baseball. Al attended the Nazarene Church in Pleasanton. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bob Nichols and one sister, Betty Bryant Survivors include his wife, Fern of the home; one son, J.R. Nichols & wife, Vickie of Prescott, Kansas and daughters, Sherrie Clifton & Roy, of Pleasanton, Kansas, Sandra Vredenburg & Jim of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Nancy Kight & Jimmy of Salina, Oklahoma and Judy Voth & Frank of Independence, Kansas; one sister, Virginia Helton of Tucson, Arizona; eleven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 5, 2009 at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Pleasanton, Kansas. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, Sunday at the chapel. Contributions are suggested to the Prescott Countryview Nursing Home. Interment will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery.
